Major Grants for 1995-96

The Society is pleased to announce that, as a result of the third competition for the research grants set up with funds received towards its centenary appeal, the following grants have been made:

  • $1,500 from the Bibliographical Society of America as the Fredson Bowers Award, to the Ven. Dr D. N. Griffiths, for his work on the bibliography of the Book of Common Prayer, with an additional sum to be paid by the Society in 1997, bringing the total to £2000;
  • £500 from the Oxford Bibliographical Society, with an additional £100 from the Society, to Mr John Bidwell, for his work on the English paper trade, 1557-1695; 
  • £1,750 to Dr M. Keblusek, for a study of Michael Honywood and his book purchases, 1643-1660: the award associated with the name of the Antiquarian Booksellers Association;
  • £350 to Mr James Armstrong for his study of the Obelisk Press;
  • £500 to Dr Julia Boffey for work on the Index of Middle-English Verse;
  • £350 to Professor James Carley for a study of George Boleyn's books;
  • £500 to Mr Robert Goulding for work on the mathematical papers of Sir Henry Savile;
  • £1250 to Dr Lotte Hellinga for provenance research in association with BMC XI;
  • £500 to Mr Michael Laird for research into Gothic bindings in New York City libraries; email: gothic@panix.com

  • £1750 to Mr Nigel Tattersfield for work on book illustrations engraved in the workshops of Ralph Beilby and Thomas Bewick.
