Major Grants for 1999-2000
The Society is pleased to announce that, as a result of the seventh competition for the research grants set up with funds received towards its centenary appeal, the following grants have been made:
- $1,500 from the Bibliographical Society of America, as the Fredson Bowers award, to Dr. Peter W.M. Blayney for his work on the Stationers’ Company and the printers of London, 1501-1616, with an additional award of £500 to be paid by the Society;
- £500 from the Oxford Bibliographical Society, as the Falconer Madan Prize, to Dr. Adam Smyth for his study of the relationships between C17 printed miscellanies and MS commonplace books;
- £1,330 to Mr. Julian Pooley for his work on the Nichols family and business, 1745-1873: the award associated with the name of the Antiquarian Booksellers Association;
- £1,000 to Dr. Martin Davies for his study of Italian humanist books;
- £750 to Professor David L. Gants for work on the history of printing in Jacobean London;
- £750 to Mr. Patrick Leary for work on periodical publishing and the literary community: Bradbury & Evans and the Punch circle;
- £1,000 to Mr. Andrew Martin for research into the bibliography of anglophone literature and literary criticism by black South Africans 1800-1950;
- £2,000 to Professor Stephen W. May for work on ‘The Bibliography and First-Line Index of English Verse 1559-1603’;
- £1,000 to Dr. Andrew D. Murphy for a study of the publishing history of Shakespeare;
- £600 to Ms Jill Shefrin for work on the bibliographical and historical analysis of juvenile table games published in England between 1750 and the late C19;
- £450 to Miss Julianne Simpson for research into the production, sale and distribution of Christopher Plantin’s Polyglott Bible;
- £500 to Dr. Betty S. Travitsky for work on writings by Englishwomen 1500-1640.
