MONTHLY LECTURE PROGRAMMETuesday, 20 November 2007 (Garwood Lecture Theatre, South Wing; please note that Tea has been moved to the Terrace restaurant ) ISABEL RIVERS: 'HENRY SCOUGAL'S THE LIFE OF GOD IN THE SOUL OF MAN : THE FORTUNES OF A BOOK, 1676-1830'.
PLEASE NOTE CHANGE OF VENUE DAVID PAISEY: 'Searching for Pirckheimer in the Remains of the Arundel Library at the Royal Society'. The
library of Willibard Pirckheimer (1470-1530) was purchased in Nuremberg
in 1636 by the Collector Earl of Arundel (1585-1646), whose library was
donated to the Royal Society in 1667. Many books were sold off in the
nineteenth and twentieth centuries: what is left?
Tuesday, 15 January 2008 (Garwood Lecture Theatre, South Wing; Tea in the Garden Room) JAMES TIERNEY: 'British Periodicals, 1660-1800: A New Index of Their Contents'. Building on work begun at the British Museum and the Bodleian Library in the 1930s by James M. Osborn of Yale, this unpublished index now includes book history data and is being converted to electronic format. The presentation will consist of a description and demonstration of the database.
Tuesday, 19 February 2008 (Garwood Lecture Theatre, South Wing;Tea in the South Cloisters) DAVID MCKITTERICK: Books for the West Indies in the early 18th century: new evidence from the London trade. In the early 18th century Barbados was at the forefront for trade with Britain not just for the Caribbean, but also for some of the colonies in North America. This paper will explore some of the mechanisms of that trade, and reveal an unexpected range of reading.
